High school sports are not professional sports. No matter how seriously anyone takes them, athletics at that level of play will never be the big leagues.

Nevertheless, plenty of students, parents and coaches out there continuing to promote the bad habit of taking the games too seriously. And when they promote that habit, bad things can happen.

Such was the case on Tuesday, when Yuba City and Del Campo high schools had to cancel the rest of their baseball game after a brawl engulfed both of the teams.

The reports from the game indicate that the players had been jawing back and forth throughout the game, when a comment from Del Campo’s first base coach sent Yuba City’s pitcher over the edge.

The pitcher, Jaylon Deas, ripped a fastball right at the coach, setting both teams off in a fight that hadboth schools upset.

Yuba City has announced it will take action, suspending the program for a week and likely handing out individual suspensions to players.
