NHL Gives Fans Chance to ‘Drink from Stanley Cup’ in Times Square (Video)

The Boston Bruins are about to embark on their Stanley Cup title defense in the playoffs.

The B's were the last team to drink from the Cup after securing their first championship in more than 39 years last June. But the NHL is now giving fans their own chance to "drink from the Cup."

The NHL has erected a 21-foot high, 6,600-pound repicla of the Stanley Cup trophy in the middle of New York City's Times Square from Wednesday until Friday to kickoff the 2012 playoffs.

The replica will serve as a working water fountain during its stay in the Big Apple, allowing fans and visitors from around the world to take part in a long-standing NHL tradition, and drink from the cup.

Stanley Cup Fountain Facts

• When set on the platform, the height of the structure from the ground to the top of the
• fountain is approximately 21 ½ feet.
• The entire structure weighs approximately 6,600 lbs.
• Designers and engineers used the Hockey Hall of Fame’s 3-D renderings and high-resolution images to create a large scale representation of the Stanley Cup.
• The Stanley Cup fountain will feature 12 industrial fountain pop jets in the upper bowl, shooting water six feet above the Cup.
• Visitors can drink NYC Water from specific spouts at the base of the fountain wit reusable souvenir cups provided by NBC Sports, the NHL and NYC Water
• In total, the system will pump 120 gallons of water per minute through the structure
