Jimenez will receive a five-game suspension and a fine for "intentionally" throwing at Tulowitzski, MLB tweeted Monday night.
Jimenez said earlier Monday that he didn't think a suspension was warranted after he hit the shortstop on his left elbow on the first pitch of the at bat, leading to the benches clearing and some nasty words being exchanged. The pitcher said the ball just got away and was not a result of Tulowitzki and Jimenez exchanging barbs in the media throughout the spring.
Tulowitzki, who did not play in Monday's spring training game, told MLB.com he expected to play in Friday's opener against the Astros. He wouldn't give his opinion on whether the beaning was intentional or not, but Rockies manager Jim Tracy had sharp words for Jimenez, calling it a "gutless act" and saying a suspension was in order.
Jimenez had told foxsports.com that he was disappointed he did not get a contract offer from Colorado, which gave new deals to Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez. Jimenez was instead traded to Cleveland last season and saw his production drop as the season wore on.
Tulowitzki has said Jimenez needs to move on.
