BC Athletics announced on Tuesday that it had received a $5 million gift to endow the men’s ice hockey head coaching position from an anonymous donor, making it the largest gift the athletics program has ever received.
The donor credited a long love of BC Hockey, admiration for current coach Jerry York as well as Boston College’s high graduation rates as reasons for the gift.
“I am humbled and honored to lead a program where its alumni care so deeply about our commitment to excellence and developing our student-athletes as men and women for others,” said York. “This gift signals that BC Hockey will continue to be competitive for years to come.”
York, a Boston College graduate himself, is among the all-time greats in college coaching history, with five NCAA championships and 913 wins to his name so far. This year’s championship marked the third time in five years that the Eagles have won it all.
