On Monday night Dustin Pedroia jammed his right thumb diving for a ball off the bat of Detroit Tigers second baseman Danny Worth, exacerbating a preexisting injury from earlier this season. On Tuesday Pedroia went for an MRI which revealed a tear in his adductor (according to Pedroia "it's like a muscle"), which, while bad news, may still enable him to make a quick return to the diamond.
Pedroia and the Red Sox will now wait for the swelling and bruising in the thumb to subside before considering letting him back on the field. However, Pedroia professes that he doesn't believe that the injury will keep him out for long.
