The battle on the field between the Red Sox and the Royals wasn’t the only one going on at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday night.

After Cody Ross struck out, he let go of his bat, and it went flying into the stands. There, fans began scrapping for the piece of lumber in what turned out to be a spirited encounter between rivals.

One Red Sox fan battled a Royals fan wearing a Jeff Francoeur jersey. Then reinforcements arrived on the scene for each side. The Red Sox fan added a Kevin Youkilis jersey-wearing ally while “Zack Grienke” helped in vain for the K.C. side. Ultimately, the Red Sox fans came away victorious, much to the delight of NESN announcers Don Orsillo and Dennis Eckersley.

Here’s what the mayhem looked like, in animated form.
