Since Kevin Youkilis was placed on the disabled list on May 2, Red Sox fans have had the fortune of seeing Will Middlebrooks step up in his spot with great success. Since Middlebrooks' call-up, many have wondered what will happen when Youkilis returns from injury. That day may be coming soon.
Youkilis took a big step in the right direction Wednesday with his first minor league start since going out with a strained back. Youkilis batted third in the lineup at the designated hitter spot for the Pawtucket Red Sox, who visited the Durham Bulls on Wednesday night.
Youk went 1-for-2 with a walk and a double in the fifth inning. After the double, Youkilis scored on a three-run home run by Lars Anderson. Although he did not see any time on the field, Youkilis took a positive step toward returning to the Red Sox.
Also making his second career start for the Durham Bulls on Wednesday was former Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui. Following his hitless debut on Tuesday, Matsui showed he still has skill at the plate, driving in two runs with a double in the bottom of the first inning. He also hit a single in the bottom of the fifth, going 2-for-4 in the game.
The PawSox defeated the Durham Bulls, 5-4.
