Make no mistake about it, Mr. President. Those were “boos” you were hearing.

President Barack Obama made a few enemies during a fundraiser at Boston’s Symphony Hall on Monday when he thanked the city for Kevin Youkilis.

Youkilis, of course, was traded to Obama’s beloved Chicago White Sox on Sunday, much to the president’s delight. When Obama expressed his pleasure with the deal, however, it was met with a chorus of playful “boos,” and perhaps a few “Youks” along the way.

“I didn’t think I was going to get any boos out of here,” Obama said after making his joke. “I should not have brought up baseball. I understand. My mistake! My mistake! You’ve got to know your crowd.”

Youkilis spent parts of nine seasons with the Red Sox, earning two World Series rings and three All-Star selections while becoming one of the team’s biggest dirt dogs. He was dealt on Sunday after weeks of trade speculation, meaning Will Middlebrooks is now Boston’s everyday third baseman.

Youkilis has battled through injuries and lackluster play this season, but that isn’t lessening Obama’s confidence by any means.

I’m going to make sure every one of his teeth are broken, his arms are broken, his legs are broken. He’s not going to be able to walk out of the octagon by himself. I can guarantee that.
