If Abby Wambach‘s goal against North Korea didn’t cause an international incident, the celebration that followed it might do the trick.
On Tuesday, Wambach and her teammates on the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team performed a team “wave” dance to celebrate Wambach’s strike.
The Olympics have shown that, Hope Solo aside, the women’s soccer team does most things as a unit. It parties (“in the U.S.A.”) together, plays together and even celebrates goals together. Nine of the 11 U.S. players on the field lined up, held hands and did the classic dance move in succession, making for a pretty cool sight.
Wambach’s goal, her third of the tournament, came in the 25th minute. It stood as the difference between the two teams, and the U.S. advanced to the quarterfinal round with a perfect record in group play. It will play an unknown (at this point) opponent on Friday.
North Korea apparently had little problem with the celebration. After the flag mix-up that delayed the start of the team’s first game in the competition, the North Koreans seem content to take things in stride.
