Adam Scott's Collapse at British Open Among Golf's Top 10 Major Meltdowns (Video)It won’t make him feel any better, but Adam Scott can take solace in the fact that he was not the first player — nor will he be the last — to falter down the stretch in a major championship.

The nature of golf, where a few bad shots can negate four days’ worth of good ones, makes a late-round collapse particularly heartbreaking. And when you’re a player searching for your first career major — as Scott was — missing after coming so close can have an impact on the rest of your career (think Jean van de Velde).

It could have been worse, though. At least he didn’t pull a Roy McAvoy and shoot a 12 on the 18th hole.
