The Red Sox slugger should be celebrating, after hitting his 400th career home run on Wednesday afternoon. Instead, Boston's top hitter over the first half of the season was reportedly complaining about his contract over the past 48 hours.
Ortiz has the right to gripe, as he's put up better numbers than any member of the Sox this season and better than anyone expected from the 36-year-old DH heading into this season. But while his one-year deal may seem a bit unfair to the slugger, the team has much bigger things to worry about at the present time.
After a horrid road trip that featured just two wins in seven games, the Red Sox are back to floating around the .500 mark and need to do something about it before the All-Star break. Better yet, the first place Yankees are coming to town for a four-game set before the league goes on hiatus for a few days. So, while Ortiz may have an axe to grind, let's focus and see if the team can at least stay above .500 heading into the second half of the season.
