Sports have a unique ability.

While sports can often be the root of evil when it comes to fan bases going a bit over the top and clashing, it can also be the source of so much good. Very little has the ability to unify a nation quite like sports.

We've seen this national unification a number of times throughout the history of this country, especially with how mainstream sports have become, but certain moments stand above the rest.

When U.S. citizens struggled to gain a sense of normacly in the wake of the tragic September 11 attacks, sports proved to be a major coping mechanism, bringing the country together in a time of need. The result was plenty of hair-raising, emotional moments that will forever live on as part of our nation's identity.

So this Fourth of July, between throwing back some burgers and dogs and catching up on some MLB action, let us take a look back and remember some of the most patriotic sports moments the United States has ever seen.
