In the past, aces Jon Lester and Josh Beckett could be relied on to deliver dazzling starts and lift their team to a much-needed victory. However, both have been less-than-stellar this season, with identical 5-8 records.
As a whole, the Red Sox pitching staff has struggled in the first inning, something Lester continued Sunday against the Blue Jays when he gave up five runs in the first. With Lester and Beckett unable to break the trend and help rescue the team, the Red Sox have looked to Clay Buchholz to help lead the staff.
