London Would Have Been Wise Not to Use Teletubby Knock-Offs as Olympic Mascots

The history of Olympic mascots is not exactly sterling — but this year, London might have taken the cake for weirdness.

Wenlock and Mandeville, named after English towns important to Olympic history, are apparently supposed to be drops of steel. But you wouldn't be too out of line to associate them instead with Tinky Winky, Dipsy or one of the other Teletubbies from the PBS hit show of 15 years ago.

One can only hope that future Olympic Committees will learn from this and design slightly less ambiguous mascots that won't frighten little children with their strangeness.
