Nick Punto Starting in Place of Injured Will Middlebrooks Against Jarrod Parker, AthleticsWill Middlebrooks was pulled from the Red Sox’ extra-inning win in Seattle on Sunday night with a hamstring injury, and it appears that the Sox staff are being extra careful with their young superstar.

In Middlebrooks’ place, Nick Punto will be getting the start at third base in Boston’s first of three games against the Athletics out in Oakland. David Ortiz, who was named to his eighth All-Star team on Sunday, will be digging into his typical three hole. He’ll be followed by Sox catcher and All-Star snub Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Ryan Kalish will get the start in center field and bat seventh against 23-year-old A’s starter Jarrod Parker (4-3, 2.57).

Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-2, 4.91) will take the hill for Boston, still in search of his first win of the season despite a pair of stellar performances of late.
