The United States is tied with China for first place in the Summer Olympics medal count with 17 medals, thanks in large part to the efforts of swimmers Missy Franklin and Matt Grevers on Tuesday.
Franklin took home her first gold medal in Monday's 100-meter backstroke in an impressive victory. The 17-year-old won the event only 14 minutes after competing in the semifinal heat of the 200-meter freestyle. The young Olympian has captured the attention of fans around the world and looks to have the talent to take home many more gold medals.
On the men's side of the pool, Grevers and teammate Nick Thoman added to the United States' medal count in the men's 100-meter backstroke. The pair dominated the event, with Grevers taking home gold and Thoman finishing second for the silver medal. It was not all smiles for Team USA, however, as Ryan Lochte failed to medal in the men's 200-meter freestyle, finishing fourth.
On Day Five of the Olympics, the U.S. is looking to make history. Swimmer Michael Phelps is only one medal away from tying the record for the most medals by a single Olympic athlete. He can break that record Tuesday as he competes in both the men's 200-meter fly and men's 4×200-meter free relay.

Phelps will be looking to make Olympic history as the most decorated athlete ever, going for his record-tying 18th medal in the men's 200-meter fly and his record-breaking 19th medal in the 4×200-meter relay.
The American squad for women's gymnastics will also take the floor Tuesday, looking to overcome Jordyn Wieber's exclusion from individual all-around competition.
