The Kevin Youkilis trade was designed to keep the Red Sox lineup consistent and to make filling out the lineup card easier for manager Bobby Valentine.
Well, so much for that plan.
With Middlebrooks tweaking his hamstring sliding in to second base during Sunday afternoon's game in Seattle, the Red Sox are in a bit of a scrambling mode, playing Monday night with a bench consisting of backup catcher Kelly Shoppach and utility infielder Brent Lillibridge — who did, in fact, get in to the game. Earlier Tuesday the Red Sox placed Daisuke Matsuzaka on the disabled list with neck ailment, meaning they get to add infielder Mauro Gomez, who's been raking at Triple-A Pawtucket with a .614 slugging percentage, and did get two at-bats with the big club earlier in the season.
It remains to be seen what will happen with Middlebrooks.
