It doesn't figure that too many Star Trek fans are into athletics, but the Dodgers are trying to reach out to the nerd community, hosting their first-ever "Star Trek Night" this Friday, August 3. As part of the festivities, former Star Trek original series star William Shatner will be throwing out the first pitch — no word on whether he'll also be performing some of his spoken word selections.
The official Dodger Stadium meetup of Trekkies will actually be held in the outfield "Coca-Cola-All-You-Can-Eat-Pavilion," and those who buy tickets beforehand get specially-designed t-shirt meshing the traditional Starfleet and Dodger uniforms.
We're not sure about the logic of contributing to the obesity epidemic among Star Trek fans, but the fact that the Dodgers are embracing the TV and movie franchise does make a certain amount of sense, as the world's largest Star Trek convention is held annually in nearby Pasadena, California.
