Baseball may have followed football's lead on some instant replay advancements, but it's still not keen on adapting other parts of the sport, like the good ol' ball spike.
Zack Greinke found that out the hard way Saturday when he was booted from his start against the Astros after angrily spiking the ball following a call at first base.
Greinke was obviously mad at himself after the close play, but that's not how umpire Scott Holbrook saw it, and Greinke got the quick hook. Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke was also tossed after he tried to advocate for Greinke.
Greinke, to his credit, didn't blame the ump for the call. He called it a mental mistake.
"I didn't think there was anything wrong [with spiking the ball] at the time, but after looking back at it, I thought, 'Oh [man], that definitely didn't look good,' " Greinke said, according to The Associated Press. "I put him in a bad position, and he had to make a decision."
