The Red Sox have been reluctant to give David Ortiz a multi-year deal, and given the slugger’s age and body type, it’s probably understandable.
That being said, there isn’t a hitter in the Red Sox lineup who’s more important to the club, and while one might think that the designated hitter’s extended battle with an Achilles injury might make Boston more skittish about Ortiz’s health going forward, it may have actually increased his value. In short, the Sox offense hasn’t performed all that well without its No. 3 hitter, and the Sox are finding Oritz’s production tough to replace.
