Getting crossed up is a catcher's worst nightmare. Fortunately, it's becoming less and less of an issue because of a new product called Game Signs.
Game Signs are bright-colored stickers that a catcher can place on his fingernails so that his signs are easily and effectively communicated to the pitcher. This ensures the two battery mates are on the same page, thus eliminating the risk of injury and disappointing on-field results.
A huge benefit of Game Signs is that they don't interfere with a catcher's ability to throw. Using white tape can often help a catcher relay signs, but it also has the potential to limit his throwing ability. With the number of speedsters out there, being able to make a good toss is crucial, and Game Signs ensures that's a possibility.
Once the game is over, Game Signs can be easily removed, which is amazing considering how durable they are. You won't have to worry about them coming off in the heat of battle, but when all is said and done, they require just a quick peel.
Boston's Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Washington's Kurt Suzuki are among those MLB catchers who have already turned to Game Signs.
"Preparing for game day can definitely get hectic for a catcher and the last thing I need to worry about is if my pitchers and I are on the same page with our signs," Saltalamacchia said. "Applying Game Signs takes little effort and allows me more time to prepare my guys. Our entire staff loves the way my signs light up from behind the plate. Suzuki expressed similar sentiments, noting that Game Signs give him an added confidence because he knows he's always on the same page as his pitcher.
So throw away the nail polish, catchers. Leave the white tape in the drawer. Game Signs is a game-changer.
