If you just look at regular season records, there’s no doubt that the Texas Rangers and the New York Yankees are the two best teams in the American League. They finished with the AL’s top two records last season and are on pace to do so again in 2012.
But the playoffs are a different beast, and though both teams hold sizeable leads in their divisions — making the possibility of either team playing in a one-game wild card playoff unlikely — neither team has the dominant arms at the front of the rotation that are so important in the five-game divisional series. That may change when CC Sabathia returns from the disabled list, but NESN’s Dennis Eckersley says that, for now, neither team should feel too confident in their World Series chances.
