First you get the money, then you get the power, then you get the… football?
Oscar-winning actor Al Pacino could be appearing in movie theaters soon playing former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno in a movie about the Jerry Sandusky scandal, according to Deadline New York.
The movie will be based off Joe Posnanski‘s best-selling biography of the coach, Paterno, and reportedly will be shopped around to movie studios next week.
While the project is still in its early stages, it’s expected to get picked up pretty quickly, considering the high profile of the Sandusky scandal and Pacino’s star power.
The report rightly points out that Pacino does have some experience playing an embattled football coach, which he did in memorable fashion in Oliver Stone‘s Any Given Sunday.
Rick Nicita, Pacino’s manager, will reportedly be on board as a producer, while Pacino’s agents at ICM Partners are expected to help get the project sold.
There’s no secret of what the movie’s plot would be, of course. It would chart Paterno’s rise to the top of the college football coaching profession, before his legacy came crashing down in the wake of the Sandusky scandal and Paterno’s actions — or lack thereof — came to light.
There’s no mention of who might be in talks to play Sandusky, but one has to think that will be on of the more interesting casting decisions in recent memory.
