Thursday night's series finale with the Rays had all the makings of a feel-good game for the Red Sox. Clay Buchholz threw seven innings of shutout ball before his back tightened up, and Jose Iglesias silenced all of his offensive doubters for at least one day, going 3-for-4 with a blast into the left-field stands.
Then, the ninth inning happened.
Instead of walking off the turf with a win, Boston found itself on the losing end of a 7-4 score. Tampa scored six times in the ninth off Andrew Bailey and Vicente Padilla, with a walk-off home run by B.J. Upton capping the drama.
