Bobby Valentine remains the manager of the Boston Red Sox, and despite what other people may think of that, he is keeping his good humor.
On Monday, speculation ran rampant that a visit to Seattle by Red Sox principal owner John Henry and general manager Ben Cherington signaled Valentine's impending dismissal.
The two member of the Sox front office emphasized, however, that the purpose of their trip was more benign and that it was only, in Henry's words, a "fact-finding" mission that took them westward.
Valentine responded to the discussion of his job security in sarcastic fashion on Labor Day.
"For any of you who are sorry I didn't get fired, I'm sorry that you're sorry," Valentine said to reporters in Seattle. "But I don't think I did this morning."
Valentine, who met with Henry over breakfast before Monday's game, was also asked how that meeting went. Again, Bobby V responded with a bit of a sarcastic edge.
"I'm always in a good mood after breakfast," he said. "It's one of my favorite meals."
While breakfast is arguably the most important meal of the day, Valentine could be facing one of the most important series of the season. The Red Sox have started their nine-game road trip by losing six straight games, and if the team doesn't improve against the Mariners, any shouts for the Red Sox manager's firing will only get louder.
