What Domagoj Vida was thinking is anyone's guess.
The Croatian soccer player was fined £80,000 ($129,000) by his team, Dinamo Zagreb, for opening a beer can on the bus ride to a game, World Soccer reports.
Dinamo Zagreb, Croatia's defending champion, was on its way to play lower league club NK Vrsar in a cup game Tuesday when the incident occured. Head coach Ante Cacic kicked Vida off the bus, but that was the least of the defender's problems.
"The Dinamo management has decided to punish Vida, a Croatia international with 14 caps, with a financial penalty of 100,000 euros for his behaviour," the club said on its website.
Local newspaper Jutarnji List joked that "It was the most expensive beer Vida has ever had."
Vida was not the first Dinamo Zagreb player to face stiff sanctions this season. In August, the club fined midfielder Sammir nearly £215,000 ($350,000) for going to a nightclub the night before a UEFA Champions League qualifying game against Moldova's Sheriff Tiraspol.
Let's hope Vida, 23, saved some of the money he made at German club Bayer Leverkusen, where he played in 2010-11. Such a hefty fine would nearly bankrupt many players in Croatia's top flight.
