Dustin Pedroia has been just about the only bright spot on a long, disappointing road trip for the Red Sox.
But Boston notched its first win of the West Coast swing Tuesday night, meaning Pedroia's top-notch production at the plate may finally be getting enough help to push the team to victory.
The Red Sox will go for a second win — and try to take the series — Wednesday night against the Mariners, who have played well this month but have done so despite a middling batting order. Seattle has one of the weakest lineups in the league, with nary a starter in Tuesday night's game batting above .278. A few players were even hitting below the .200 mark of futility.
Pedroia, however, just keeps getting hotter. He carries a 15-game hitting streak into Wednesday evening's contest, and he now has three games in a row with at least two hits and a run. He's lifted his season batting average to .292.
