Jason Varitek and Pedro Martinez were battery mates for seven seasons with the Boston Red Sox. The pair helped Boston win its first World Series title in 86 years in 2004.
While Varitek just retired after the 2011 season and Martinez has only been out of baseball since 2009, both could be joining the Red Sox staff in 2013. Peter Gammons explained on Red Sox Gameday Live on Wednesday that Varitek and Martinez could play advisory roles on the Sox staff next season.
Both players are beloved by fans and respected by their peers, and their resumes show that they deserve to work at the next level in the MLB. Varitek and Martinez are both also regarded among the smartest players at their position and could no doubt help groom future Red Sox stars.
As the Red Sox look to rebuild and reload in the offseason, bringing Varitek and Martinez back to the organization would certainly help.
To hear why Gammons believes bringing Varitek and Martinez back is a good move, check out the video above.
