Jon Lester entered Tuesday’s start against the Yankees having won four of his last five outings — a stretch that included going at least seven innings on three occasions. The results simply weren’t there against the Bronx Bombers, though.
Lester didn’t factor into the decision, but he walked seven in 5 1/3 innings of work. In the end, Lester was only charged with three earned runs, but he has Junichi Tazawa to thank for that, as Tazawa struck out Nick Swisher and Alex Rodriguez in the sixth to escape a major jam with the Red Sox trailing by just a run.
Lester said after the game that it felt like he was “pitching uphill” all night, and that he just couldn’t get ahead of hitters. The lefty was also very appreciative of Tazawa’s effort and of his teammates pushing across a run in the ninth for a victory.
