A double play is one of the best ways to get out of an inning, if the defense can turn the trick.
The Reds had just the opportunity in the top of the fourth inning Tuesday night against the Phillies. They needed two outs to get out of the frame, so when center fielder Drew Stubbs went to make a catch, the players got in the double play mindset.
It turns out Cincinnati is really good at turning double plays. Instead of settling for a simple Stubbs catch and throw to Brandon Phillips at second to double up the runner, Phillips also turned and fired home to catcher Ryan Hanigan to try for a force of the runner at third. The reasoning? Perhaps Stubbs' catch wasn't quite a catch, and the Reds needed to be sure to get the outs where they could.
