Report: Jason Varitek Close to Rejoining Red Sox Organization in Some CapacityIt certainly sounds like Jason Varitek will be back in the Red Sox organization before too long, but it's still a little uncertain as to when that will happen and in what capacity he'll return.

Multiple reports say that Varitek is close to finalizing an agreement with the club to return as some sort of an assistant in the front office.

ESPN.com reports that Varitek will likely rejoin the organization as a special assistant to general manager Ben Cherington. The former catcher will reportedly be involved in some sort of player development and talent evaluation role and will be "encouraged to learn the Red Sox system from top to bottom," according to the ESPN report.

WEEI.com reports that Varitek could soon be headed to Florida to work with minor leagues during the fall instructional league.

It's been long-assumed that Varitek would return to the club at some point once his playing days ended. The 40-year-old, who retired prior to the 2012 season, was back in Boston this week to take part in celebrations for the 2004 World Series champions team that the captain was a part of.
