The Blue Jays jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Friday, but then Ryan Lavarnway struck. The young catcher blasted a three-run shot, tying the game and giving the Red Sox hope, which they eventually turned into an 8-5 win at Rogers Centre.
Lavarnway added another RBI later in the game, but his teammates were the subject of his praise following the victory. Lavarnway lauded the effort of Daisuka Matsuzaka and Daniel Nava, who had a big night both at the plate and in the field.
Nava made a fantastic diving play in the eighth inning, which kept the potential tying run camped at second base and gave the Red Sox a chance to then do damage with the score still tied in the ninth. Lavarnway called the catch one of the most spectacular he’s seen all year, and he fully expects it to earn Web Gem consideration.
