Following Sunday's NFL action, many football fans were wondering how the situation with the replacement referees could get any worse. Then, Monday happened.
With the Seahawks trailing the Packers 12-7 with eight seconds remaining on Monday night, Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson tossed up a hail mary. Seahawks wide receiver Golden Tate and Packers safety M.D. Jennings both went up for the ball, and both came down with it, meaning the game essentially came down to the officials' call.
One ref threw his hands up to signal a touchdown, while another official signaled a touchback, creating a wonderful snapshot of all that has been wrong with the ongoing referee debacle.
The play was then ruled a touchdown, at which point it was automatically reviewed. The referees eventually upheld the initial ruling, giving the Seahawks a 14-12 win. As you'd expect, though, Seattle's upset is hardly the biggest storyline of Monday night's game. Instead, it's the refs, which has been the case far too much early on this season.
Former NFL quarterbacks Steve Young and Trent Dilfer — both of whom are now ESPN analysts — have been losing their patience since Day 1, and Monday put them over the edge. Frustration is suddenly morphing into anger, as the NFL's refusal to settle its dispute with the regular refs is now coming off as a slap in the face.
