Phil Mickelson is an all-time PGA Tour great, a four-time major champion and, despite the U.S. team's Ryder Cup loss, still a pretty darn good golfer at age 42.
Mickelson's also uniquely indebted to the city of San Diego, Calif., even going to far as to be a part of a group bidding for ownership of the Padres. So, perhaps it wasn't that big of a surprise to see him show up during halftime during the Chargers' Monday Night Football showing, to attempt a chip for charity.
Mickelson was tasked with an end zone to end zone shot — a little over 100 yards, which should be about a sand wedge for Lefty — aiming at concentric circles. Each circle was worth an increasing amount of money, from $50,000 all the way up to $1 million to benefit the non-profit organization First Book. Mickelson only hit the largest circle, earning $50k for the charity, and receiving some boos in the process.
However, if Chargers fans knew what was in store for them in the second half — seeing their team blow a 24-point lead — they likely would have saved their voices for Philip Rivers.
