Hispanic Heritage Month 2012 was actually Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, so we’re not sure if Hispanic Heritage Weekend is a real thing, or an invention of the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs — affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks. Either way, the team sure chose a questionable way to celebrate it.
For a game on Nov. 16, the team will not only be giving out maracas (and be visited by Dora the Explorer), but will also wearing jerseys that seem to not so much celebrate Hispanic heritage as display Hispanic stereotypes. Maracas? Check. Comic mustache? Check. Sombrero? Check.
Whether or not the promotion in general carries negative racial overtones (intentional or otherwise), everyone can probably agree that the jerseys are plainly hideous. Check them out in the image below.
