It might be time for Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie to be a little less supportive of Andy Reid.
Reid’s Eagles fell to the Panthers 30-22 on Monday night, pushing Philadelphia’s record to a disappointing 3-8. More importantly, the latest hiccup could cost the Eagles head coach his job — at least that’s what conventional wisdom and a ticked off Philly fan base will tell you.
Reid noted after the game, though, that no decision has been made as it pertains to his job status. While it could just be a matter of time before Reid gets the axe, Lurie apparently hasn’t discussed the matter with the Eagles’ head man.
“We haven’t talked about that,” Reid said after the game. “[Lurie has] been supportive. Obviously, he’s as competitive as anybody. He wants to win games. That’s why he’s in this business. But we really haven’t gone there.”
Well, maybe they should go there, as the Eagles have now lost seven in a row after starting the season off at a promising 3-1. Not only have this year’s high expectations not been met, but those hopes now seem laughable given the current state of the once-promising franchise.
The Eagles already fired defensive coordinator Juan Castillo back in October in what was a very controversial move. Not only had Castillo been good friends with Reid, but defense seemed to be the least of Philadelphia’s concerns at a time when the Eagles were still in the hunt. Five more losses later, and we could be looking at a few more casualties on the Eagles’ coaching staff, including Reid, who has been Philly’s head coach since 1999.
For now, even after losing to a 3-8 Panthers squad on national TV, Reid is still being the same guy he’s been throughout his entire tenure with the Eagles.
“We’re going to keep battling,” Reid said. “I have to do a better job with that obviously by how we played here. I’m not worried about all of the other things.”
The only thing Reid may soon be worried about is finding a new job. But it’s OK, because Lurie will probably be supportive during the process.
You’d be smiling too if you just signed a $100 million contract.
No.
