Bob Melvin, Davey Johnson Named AL, NL Managers of the Year

Bob Melvin and Davey Johnson each won their second Manager of the Year award on Tuesday.

Melvin won in a close race over Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter. Melvin led the Oakland Athletics to a 94-68 record in 2012 — a drastic improvement over their 74-88 finish in 2011. Melvin narrowly beat Showalater by just eight points. Melvin earned 16 first-place votes and 12 second-place votes to Showalter’s 12 first-place votes and 16 second-place votes. Melvin won his first Manger of the Year honor in 2007 with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Johnson ran away with the NL award, besting Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker by 54 points. Johnson’s Washington Nationals had the best record in the MLB this season at 98-64. The Nats finished 80-81 in 2011. Johnson won his first Manager of the Year award in 1997 with the Baltimore Orioles.
