When you’re Brian Urlacher, and you’ve been manning the Bears’ defense for thirteen years now, you should be allowed a little leeway with fans.
Certain Chicago fans were not pleased with their middle linebacker when he congratulated Danieal Manning for picking off Jay Cutler. Urlacher had a simple message for those fans, “Kiss my butt.”
“That was a nice play. I could give a crap about what people think on the street,” Urlacher told ESPN 1000.
Manning played with Urlacher on the Bears from 2006 to 2010. Urlacher said that he won’t treat his friends any different between the whistles, but when the play is over he doesn’t have to be a “tough guy.”
“[Manning]’s my friend. I wish he wouldn’t have caught it, but he did, so nice play to you. I don’t give a crap about what fans or people say, they can kiss my butt. I don’t care.”
Urlacher is absolutely correct, too. Just because fans “hate” the other team doesn’t mean that the players on the field do as well. It seems that the mindset that all opposing players are “the enemy” is what got the Saints in trouble for the bounty program. It’s wise to remember that the opposing team is still made up of human beings.
Urlacher was not cheering for the Texans, nor was he happy that Manning made the interception. He simply saw an impressive football play and gave him a hand for it.
“When the play is over, it’s over. It’s not like I have to go out there and be a jerk to him because it’s during the game and I’m a tough guy,” Urlacher said. “That’s not the way it is. They’re my friends. Between the whistles I’m going to try and get them, and when the play is over we’ll go back to doing whatever.”
It seems that NFL fans think of their players as emotionless robots. It doesn’t help Chicago fans’ public persona that just a week ago, they were criticizing Charles Tillman for daring to think about missing a game to watch his child‘s birth. Fans will always find something to complain about, even if their team is 7-2.

TWEET OF THE NIGHT
The Chiefs were penalized with a group touchdown celebration for a play that wound up not being a touchdown. Ouch.
Gruden: “There’s no excuse for group celebration.” Me: “Yes, the excuse is that GROUP CELEBRATIONS SHOULDN’T BE ILLEGAL.”
