It appears that someone finally told the Cleveland Browns what “waving the white flag” signifies.

The Browns organization canceled a giveaway sponsored by Ticketmaster that was supposed to take place Sunday that would hand out white flags to every fan entering Cleveland Browns Stadium. The Browns announced the promotion Wednesday via their Facebook page, and it was immediately met with criticism from Cleveland fans.

“After further and careful consideration, we felt it was in the best interests of everyone involved that we not have a giveaway item at tomorrow’s game,” said Browns spokesman Neal Gulkis, according to the Plain Dealer. “It is something that was intended to be fun for our fans and that they could rally around, and we regret that some didn’t perceive it that way. We want to thank all of our fans for their tremendous support, and we look forward to seeing them out in force at the stadium tomorrow.”

The 2-8 Browns are facing off against their biggest rivals, the 6-4 Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers will be without their top two quarterbacks and will be forced to start Charlie Batch, with Brian Hoyer backing him up. Hoyer was signed just four days ago.
