David Beckham Announces MLS Cup Will Be Last Game With L.A. Galaxy, Eyes Future Role as MLS Owner

On Sunday, the Los Angeles Galaxy secured its latest MLS Cup berth by losing to the Seattle Sounders 2-1 but holding on for an aggregate 4-2 victory.

On Monday, David Beckham announced that the Cup game, Dec. 1 in Carson against the Houston Dynamo, will be his last for the Galaxy, citing his desire for one last challenge.

“I’ve had an incredibly special time playing for the LA Galaxy, however, I wanted to experience one last challenge before the end of my playing career,” said Beckham in a statement released by the team. “I don’t see this as the end of my relationship with the league as my ambition is to be part of the ownership structure in the future.”

“In my time here I have seen the popularity of the game grow every year. I’ve been fortunate to win trophies, but more important to me has been the fantastic reception I’ve had from fans in L.A. and across the States. Soccer’s potential has no limits in this wonderful country and I want to always be part of growing it.”

Beckham made his debut with the Galaxy on July 21, 2007, in a friendly loss to Chelsea. His arrival made an immediate impact upon the finances of Los Angeles, and the league grew in stature during his time. Additionally, Beckham played with other world-class players with the Galaxy, as he teamed with Landon Donovan, Robbie Keane and Juan Pablo Angel over the years.
