The home plate at Fenway Park got plenty of use this season as the Red Sox had one of Major League Baseball’s most productive offenses. Another productive unit will be crossing home plate again this spring when the Fourth Annual Run-Walk to Home Base Presented by New Balance finishes at the most historic of historic end points.

The fundraiser supports the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital’s Home Base Program which provides medical care to Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their families that are effected by combat stress and traumatic brain injury. The event is limited to 4,000 entrants with space for up to 500 active military members available for just a $50 registration fee.

All other entrants must reach a minimum fundraising goal to participate in the 5.6-mile run-walk. Early entrants will need to raise at least $750 while all other entrants must reach the $1,000 minimum. The minimum age of participation is 14 but younger children can participate with full-fundraising adults by raising just $125.

New Balance, the Boston-based athletic apparel company, returns as the presenting sponsor.

“With our long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan ending, it’s critical we recognize and remember our veterans’ service and sacrifices,” Red Sox chairman Tom Werner said. “This inspiring fundraiser allows us to say thank you, as a community, to our extraordinary service members. With the return of New Balance as our generous presenting sponsor, the 2013 Run-Walk to Home Base is off to a great start.”

Also helping sponsor the event is New Hampshire-based global defense company BAE Electronic Systems. BAE has been a sponsor for all four years of the event.

“Through our multiyear support for the Red Sox Foundation and Mass General Hospital Home Base Program, we can help ensure local veterans with PTS or TBI and their families get the treatments and counseling they deserve and have earned,” said Lu Goncalves-Getty, director of strategic philanthropy for BAE.

Event registration is now open and can be found at www.runtohomebase.org. Any and all donations towards runners are tax deductible and benefit the Red Sox Foundation and the Home Base Program. The event will take place on Saturday, May 4, 2013.

Other sponsors for the event are Our Families First, Boston Duck Tours, Bank of America and NESN.
