While Johnny Manziel (deservedly) got most of the afternoon headlines, another college football underclassman had himself one heck of a game.
Marqise Lee did it all for the Trojans on Saturday. The sophomore Heisman candidate caught 10 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown, ran the ball six times for 66 yards and played some defense — helping out a depleted USC secondary by playing free safety. Lee had just four carries going into the game but flashed some impressive skills both out of the wildcat and on reverse runs. Lee showed why he’s so dangerous after the catch with his cut-back ability and change of direction.
It seems dangerous to allow your best offensive player to play defense and risk carrying the ball out of the backfield, but Lee seems almost superhuman in his young college career. Lee is not even eligible for the NFL after this season, and he’s already breaking records. Through 10 games, Lee has 1,447 yards on 98 receptions, with 13 touchdowns. He’s also rushed the ball 10 times for 110 yards.
