While the Red Sox reportedly made a move in signing Jonny Gomes to a two-year deal, there’s still plenty more on general manager Ben Cherington‘s plate this offseason.

It remains to be seen how much of a splash Boston will make, but with the financial flexibility gained in the midseason megadeal with the Dodgers, the possibilities are endless. And as a result, the Sox have been linked to numerous free agents, including Nick Swisher.

Swisher is coming off a season in which he hit .272 with 24 home runs and 93 RBIs with the Yankees, and while he struggled for the Bronx Bombers during the postseason, there’s no denying the guy can hit. But it’s factors beyond just his ability to drive in runs that could make Swisher an attractive option for the Red Sox. Not only is the veteran slugger versatile in that he can play both the outfield and first base — two of the Red Sox’ areas of need — but he’s also a great clubhouse guy that would add a gritty, fun attitude to the mix.

Assistant editor Ricky Doyle caught up with NESN.com MLB writer Didier Morais to get his take on the Red Sox’ reported interest in Swisher, as well as his thoughts on some of the other names on the open market.
