This is not the start that Mike Brown wanted for the Lakers, a team filled with high expectations. Now, if Brown and the Lakers can’t dig themselves out of what’s becoming a growing hole, Brown may lose his job sooner than later.
ESPN.com reports that Brown’s job may be in “immediate jeopardy” if the Lakers’ upcoming homestand is “unsuccessful.” Those are obviously very broad terms, of course, but it certainly sounds like the Lakers aren’t ruling out making a change early on, especially after the team has stumbled over itself on the way to a 1-4 start.
While the Lakers have publicly supported Brown so far, the ESPN.com report indicates that the Lakers have gotten to the point where they would at least explore the idea of making a change.
Los Angeles came into the season with high expectations after acquiring both Steve Nash and Dwight Howard in the offseason. However, the Lakers are also battling injuries so far. Nash remains out with a leg injury, Kobe Bryant is reportedly suffering from a foot injury and Howard is still recovering from back surgery.
The Lakers open this supposedly pivotal six-game homestand on Friday night. They’ll welcome Golden State to the Staples Center with games against Sacramento, San Antonio, Phoenix, Houston and Brooklyn all scheduled for the homestand.
