Report: Red Sox ‘Open’ to Idea of Dealing Andrew Bailey Despite Possibly Low Trade Value

About 11 months ago the Red Sox traded Josh Reddick to Oakland in exchange for Andrew Bailey. Now, Boston could be flipping the closer again.

Bailey’s fourth season in Major League Baseball was easily his worst, as the former All Star underwent thumb surgery during spring training and didn’t make his first appearance for the Red Sox until Aug. 14. Once he returned he was largely ineffective, posting a 7.04 ERA in 15 1/3 innings pitched.

Despite Bailey’s down year (or perhaps because of it), rival teams are saying the Red Sox are open to trading their presumed 2013 closer, according to Buster Olney. That isn’t to say that Boston is dead set on dealing him, however, as the team recognizes his trade value is at an all-time low.

Nonetheless, with the way that the Sox’ bullpen performed in 2012, there are likely multiple candidates who could get a crack at closing, including Junichi Tazawa and Clayton Mortensen.

Rival teams say that Red Sox open to dealing Andrew Bailey–but because his value is currently low, odds of them trading him are pretty low.
