With Tino Martinez off the market, the Red Sox are shifting their focus to another hitting coach candidate.
Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington plans to interview Rick Schu on Friday for the vacancy, according to ESPN Boston. The team is attempting to replace Dave Magadan, who took the same position for the Rangers.
Schu has been serving as a roving minor league instructor for the Nationals since 2009. Before taking that job, however, he was the Diamondbacks’ hitting coach for roughly two seasons.
The 50-year-old also played nine seasons in the majors as a third and first baseman, bouncing around from Philadelphia, Baltimore, Detroit, Montreal and the California Angels.
Martinez was once a candidate for the job, but the Marlins quickly hired him on Thursday as their hitting coach. Earlier in the week, Red Sox manager John Farrell expressed an interest in moving toward a two-coach system for a hitting coach.
