Baseball’s biggest spenders may be relatively quiet this winter, at least when it comes to big-name, big-money free agents.
The New York Post reports that the Yankees aren’t likely to be in on Josh Hamilton or Zack Greinke, the two biggest names in free agency this offseason. If New York does splurge on a big contract, the Post reports, it will be on a contract extension for second baseman Robinson Cano.
The Cano extension, however, is unlikely to get done, according to the report, especially given the fact that Cano is represented by Scott Boras.
The Yankees have stated that they would like to get their payroll down toward the luxury tax line, even while teams around them start to spend more and more. The Post report also points out that the Yankees are likely to be surpassed by the Dodgers for the highest payroll in baseball.
The New York payroll was roughly $196 million for 2012.
