Tino Martinez Hired By Marlins as Hitting Coach

There’s one less option for the Red Sox to fill the role of hitting coach.

Earlier on Thursday, NESN.com reported that the Red Sox were eyeing former major league first baseman Tino Martinez to fill out their coaching staff. Well, Martinez has apparently chosen to take his talents to South Beach, agreeing to become the Marlins’ hitting coach, according to The Associated Press.

During his career Martinez played for the Mariners, Yankees, Cardinals and Devil Rays, compiling three All-Star nods and finishing second in the MVP race in 1997 to Ken Griffey, Jr. Since then, Martinez has served as a special assistant with the Yankees and spent a stint as a commentator on the YES Network.

Martinez joins new Marlins manager Mark Redmond, who was hired by the team in the wake of the firing of Ozzie Guillen.
