The Royals appear serious about making a run at contention in 2013, and they’re willing to trade away some of their better prospects to prove it.

With a report swirling that Kansas City was discussing a swap of top prospect Wil Myers with the Red Sox in exchange for Jon Lester, many Boston fans are likely wondering who exactly this youngster is and whether he might be worth trading the team’s Opening Day starter for.

Myers, it turns out, is one of the hottest prospects in the K.C. organization and all of baseball. The 2012 Baseball America minor league player of the year, Myers hit 37 home runs and drove in 109 RBIs while splitting time between Double- and Triple-A last year.

Projecting as a middle-of-the-order threat, Myers is one of several minor leaguers who could be ready to make the jump to the big leagues in 2013 and contribute right away to their major-league clubs. Along with the likes of Jose Iglesias, Manny Machado and others, Myers is a name that baseball fans should be ready to learn come next Opening Day.
