Chad Jones Works Out for Eagles After Nearly Losing Leg in Car Accident (Video)

If you’re unfamiliar with Chad Jones‘ story, it’s a doozy.

Jones had just been drafted with the No. 76 pick in the 2010 draft by the Giants when his brand new car’s front-left tire got stuck in train tracks. He lost control of his car and it smashed into a telephone pole. Jones nearly had to have his left leg amputated due to severe injuries that included a fractured tibia and fibula with muscle and nerve damage. His leg had giant gashes carved into it.

The LSU safety was cut by the Giants in May after he failed a physical, but now his NFL career could be starting anew. Jones had a workout with the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday, according to the USA Today. The workout was to keep tabs on Jones for the 2013 season.

“Leg feels great, man,” Jones said. “I feel good moving around on the field. I was moving around about 90 percent. My backpedal was crisp, my drive on the ball was good. I always have the ball skills, catching the ball. But I actually felt good being on another NFL field again.”

Jones ran a 4.84 second 40-yard dash last October, and should be moving even better at this point in his recovery. When Jones was coming out of LSU, he ran a 4.59 at the NFL Scouting Combine.

It’s an incredible story that would almost certainly earn Jones Comeback Player of the Year if he could play a full season on his surgically repaired leg. A broken tibia and fibula is difficult enough to come back from, but doctors also had to transport veins from his right leg due to how much damage had been done to his left.
